Trip Photos

Hello, Seabirders,

Just a quick post to let you know that we still have openings on the pelagic trip from Bodega Bay to the Cordell Bank and Bodega Canyon this Sunday, August 15th. Unless there is some major shift in the weather, we are expecting an outstanding trip, especially if today's Monterey trip is any indication of what is out there!! Thousands and thousands of seabirds!

Highlights of a very sensational, glassy smooth trip from Monterey Bay included: 25 BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSSES, 15,800 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 233 PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS, 37 BULLER'S SHEARWATERS, 580 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 7 RED PHALAROPES, 1 SOUTH POLAR SKUA, 5 POMARINE JAEGERS, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 2 JUV. AND 10 ADULT LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, 85 SABINE'S GULLS, 2 COMMON TERNS, 1 ARCTIC TERN, 250 COMMON MURRES, 24 PIGEON GUILLEMOTS, 3 XANTUS' MURRELETS, 4 CASSIN'S AUKLETS, 9 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, 1 MINKE WHALE, 18 HUMPBACK WHALES, 12 RISSO'S DOLPHINS, 370 PACIFIC WHITE-SIDED DOLPHINS, 18 DALL'S PORPOISES, 40 OCEAN SUNFISH, 1 BLUE SHARK, 1 LEATHERBACK SEA TURTLE EATING A MOON JELLY!!! Due to the very excellent conditions, every single person on board had excellent views of all species. The Xantus' murrelets were especially enjoyed by all. They were topped off by fantastic displays of the South Polar Skua which delighted photograhers. One pair of Black-footed Albatrosses was displaying with bill-clacking, and amazingly, sky-pointing! What a day!

The leader line up for the trip Sunday, August 15th includes: Peter Pyle, Mike Danzenbaker, Lisa Hug, Scott Terrill, Linda Terrill, and Debra Shearwater (with great assistance by David VanderPluym, Don Doolittle, and Steve Howell). If you would like to join us, please call Debra at 831/637-8527 until 3 pm. Saturday. Or, show up in Port O'Bodega at 6 am for boarding the New Sea Angler. Dress warmly, bring all of your food and liquids, and $155/person. We will depart at 6:30 am and return between 4-6 pm.

Shearwaters forever,
Debra Shearwater ---
