Monterey Bay
August 5, 2001 Report
by Todd McGrath

Highlights from the 8/5 Shearwater Triangle Trip recorded our first South Polar Skua of the season, as well as good numbers of Sooty Shearwaters and Jaegers. Sabine's Gulls are starting to build, and several came in close to the boat. The non-bird highlight was a 7+ foot Leatherback Sea-turtle that spent a few minutes right next to the boat. The last two trips to the Shearwater Triangle have recorded Leatherbacks, so it appears as if it is a good year to see them in the Bay. Large numbers of Jellyfish (their food) were also observed, so perhaps the turtles will stay. Other non-bird highlights included great looks at Blue Whales, Humpbacks and Risso's Dolphins.
